Shade of the Air’ was my first international commission, by “YOUrope together” in Germany, and written for Lithuanian professional folk instrument ensemble “Vaivora”. As I was interested in spectral music at that time, the structure of the piece is based on three overtone scales, multiplying and thickening the sounds from the lowest to the highest overtones. The structure of the work also influenced its form – it is one continuous line leading to the climax. Timbral colours of the folk instruments were very important in this work, and the unusual colours are obtained by various techniques, sound especially unexpected in the context of other repertoire normally performed by the group.
