Programme Note
Edge of Time (2018) is an open score created especially for the CoMA – Contemporary Music for All ensemble. The piece was commissioned for CoMA’s 30th anniversary and was premiered at King’s Place in London by the CoMA London ensemble led by Gregory Rose and the CoMA Singers led by Janet Oates.
After moving to Scotland in 2019, I initiated the CoMA Glasgow branch and arranged this piece for our ensemble. It was featured in our very first public concert as part of the Festival of Contemporary Music for All 2020.
The score itself is a journey – it includes conventionally notated sections, as well as semi-graphic sections and a piece within the piece where every performer plays their individual melodies simultaneously. The piece is an abstract journey through different time phases – some active and engaging, some meditative and repetitive, and some slowing down to almost a stop – as if reaching the edge of time.
Other arrangements of this score include a four-part open score version (full duration) and a shortened version for a trio (clarinet, cello, and piano) performed by Trio Sonorite.
