Cracks (2024)

Duration:

6’40”

Instrumentation:

Violoncello and loop pedal

Programme Note

The piece explores unrefined musical material, between sound, noise and whispering. The musical motifs are based on the theory of onomatopoeic words – that such words are like fossils in our modern language, left over from those prehistoric times when language and music were one. ”Cracks” is exactly one of those words. Repetitive, rhythm-based noise and sound melodies mimic the tribal, ritualistic nature of the music, intertwining with the sounds of modern, sophisticated music.

The piece uses a loop pedal, ‘samples’ of the music played during the piece are recorded here and now, thus the soloist creates his own accompaniment while playing.

The piece was commissioned by violoncellist Arnas Kmieliauskas, a member of Synaesthesis and Twenty Fingers Duo, and was premiered as a broadcast on Lithuanian National TV in Vilnius, 2024.
