Programme Note
The composition was written for an anonymous competition during my undergrad years, and has never been performed. At that time, I was fascinated by percussion instruments, especially Marimba, as I only just came across that percussive world that is both ‘melodic and woody’. For me, it has always had a strong association with nature – not just because of its wooden structure, but especially because you could create sounds that sound ‘accidental’, as if crackling in the forest or by the lake, and then combine them into musically meaningful melodies and gestures. There is some kind of inherent play between sound and music when you write for percussion, something very naturalistic to it.
