Programme Note
A second edition of the same piece (first written for accordion and string quartet) has been released. “Savęsp” is an old Lithuanian word that is no longer used in modern language and it means “into myself”. The piece takes the listener on a journey into the inner worlds, exploring the most intimate, quiet, and ‘forbidden’ thoughts.
This piece was commissioned by Martynas Levickis to celebrate the 100th year of Lithuanian independence. It reflects the tragic journey that our nation has endured over the past century. Being geographically located on the front lines of World War I and II, Lithuania was occupied, abused, and mistreated. Its people were sent to camps in Siberia, and persecuted by KGB agents during the Soviet Union era. However, Lithuania has finally recovered, embraced its independence, and is currently flourishing. It has a beautiful old language, untouched wild nature, forests, and a genuine respect for trees, ancient songs, and a new generation of Lithuanians who were born free and are enthusiastic, smart, and joyful.
This commission was funded by the Lithuanian Culture Council.
